English Translation
Here at my dwelling,
since the violets' blossoms
are so many now,
might someone come and lodge here?
so I wait, wondering
Meaning
Since violets bloom in such abundance at my house, I wait, wondering if someone might come and stay the night.
Commentary
Book Three Spring Poems III 89

Headnote: "A woman living in a ruined place, feeling at loose ends, picked the violets in her garden and sent this."
A woman living in a dilapidated house says that since violets bloom in such numbers there, she waits to see whether someone might come and stay. Attached to the violets she picked, the poem quietly invites a visit.
According to the headnote, a woman living in a ruined place, feeling idle and lonely, picked the violets in her garden and sent this. A well-known poem by Yamabe no Akahito in the Man'yōshū tells of spending a night in the fields, drawn by the violets, and the idea of someone lodging among violets is akin to it.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The text gives the third line as "ōkareba," which does not match "ōkereba" in the kana reading line. The wording of the text is followed here.

The first line, "Waga yado ni," means "at my house," pointing to the ruined dwelling of the headnote. 93 and 120 of this book also begin with "Waga yado no," singing of the poet's own house.
The second line, "sumire no hana no," names the garden violets the woman picked in the headnote.
The third line, "ōkareba," means "since there are so many," giving the reason.
In the fourth line, "kiyadoru" means to come and lodge. "Ya" is an interrogative particle forming a kakarimusubi pattern with "aru" in the last line.
In the last line, "kana" expresses a sigh: "how I wait, wondering if there may be such a one."
