Book Three Spring Poems III 103
Headnote: "On a night when the moon was lovely, looking at the flowers."
Looking at the blossoms on a night of beautiful moonlight, the poet wishes that, if possible, he could show the moon and flowers of this precious night to someone who understands their charm. The poem holds the wish to savor this finest of pairings with a kindred heart.
According to the headnote, it was composed while viewing the blossoms on a night when the moon was beautiful.
The poet, called "Minamoto no Saneakira," is Minamoto no Saneakira. A son of Minamoto no Kintada, he served as governor of Mutsu among other posts. He is also known for exchanging love poems with Nakatsukasa and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
The text gives the fourth line as "aware shireran," which does not match "kokoro shireramu" in the kana reading line. The wording of the text is followed here.
In the first line, "atara" means precious, a pity to waste, presenting a night too precious to let end.
The second line, "tsuki to hana to o," presents the pairing of moon and cherry blossoms, conveying the beauty of a night when both are at their height.
The third line, "onajiku wa," means "if it is all the same, if possible."
In the fourth line, "aware shiru" means to understand the charm of things. "Ra" is the continuative auxiliary "ri" and "n" the softening auxiliary "mu": "one who seems to understand."
In the last line, "baya" expresses the speaker's own wish: "I would like to show them."
