Commentary
Book Three Spring Poems III 135

Headnote: "In a year with an intercalary Third Month, at the time of the appointments ceremony, sent with a petition to the house of the Minister of the Left."
Even in a long year with an extra month, the poet wishes for a sure way to meet with spring, entrusting to it his hope for an appointment. Meeting with spring is overlaid with receiving favor in the appointments.
According to the headnote, in a year when the Third Month had an intercalary month, at the time of the ceremony for appointments to office, he sent this to the house of the Minister of the Left with a petition seeking a post. The Minister of the Left is thought to be Fujiwara no Tadahira, Tsurayuki's patron. The next poem is the Minister's reply, and the two form an exchange.
The poet, Ki no Tsurayuki, was a son of Ki no Mochiyuki. He was the leading compiler of the Kokin Wakashū and wrote its kana preface. He served as governor of Tosa among other posts, is known as the author of the Tosa Diary, and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

In the first line, "amari," surplus, refers to the intercalary month, showing that an extra month is added to the year.
The second line, "arite yuku beki," means "which should pass with even a surplus."
In the third line, "dani" means "even." Whereas 97 of this book imagines spring coming twice in a year, this poem sings of a year whose spring is lengthened by an intercalary Third Month.
In the fourth line, "haru," spring, is both the season and the time of favor through appointments.
In the last line, "yoshi" means a means, and "mogana" expresses a wish. The next poem, 136, answers with "awazarame ya wa," taking up the word "au," to meet.
