Commentary
Book Five Autumn Poems I 249

Headnote: "On the same theme."
The poet imagines the Weaver Maid opening her door at dawn and gazing out, lost in thought, longing for the sky where she parted still wanting more. Picturing her the morning after the parting, he shares in her loneliness.
According to the headnote, it was composed on the same theme as the preceding poem, that is, the feelings of the morning of the eighth of the Seventh Month. Where the preceding poem wished for waves to detain the departing Weaver Maid, this poem imagines her heart after her return.
The poet, called "Tsurayuki," is Ki no Tsurayuki. A son of Ki no Mochiyuki, he was the leading compiler of the Kokin Wakashū and wrote its kana preface. He served as governor of Tosa among other posts, is known as the author of the Tosa Diary, and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

The first line, "Asato akete," means "opening the door at dawn," and has an extra syllable.
In the second line, "nagame" means "to gaze absently, lost in thought"; "ya" is an interrogative particle, and "ran," the attributive form of the auxiliary of present conjecture, completes the kakarimusubi pattern. The poem pauses here.
The third line, "tanabata wa," means "the Weaver Maid," standing in inversion with the second line.
The fourth line, "akanu wakare no," means "of the parting that leaves one wanting," using the same words as "akanu wakare o" in 247 of this book.
The last line, "sora o koitsutsu," means "longing for the sky," with "tsutsu" expressing continuation. It shows a heart longing for the sky of the River of Heaven where they parted.
