Book Six Autumn Poems II 302
Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet says that the thatch of the makeshift hut that guards the autumn rice fields is so coarse that his sleeves are ever wet with night dew. It conveys the loneliness of nights spent in a hut beside the fields at harvest time.
It is famous as the opening poem of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. It is thought that the anonymous poem in Book Ten of the Man'yōshū, "aki ta karu kariho o tsukuri waga oreba koromode samuku tsuyu zo okinikeru," changed its form as it was handed down and came to be attributed to Emperor Tenji. 295 of this book also opens with the same phrase, "aki no ta no kariho no."
The poet is Emperor Tenji. A son of Emperor Jomei, he led the Taika Reforms as Prince Naka no Ōe and later took the throne at the Ōmi Ōtsu Palace.
The first line, "Aki no ta no," means "of the ripened autumn fields," the same opening as 295 of this book.
In the second line, "kariho" is a pivot word joining "kariho," a makeshift hut, and "kariho," reaped ears of rice. It is the same pivot word as "kariho no yado no" in the second line of 295.
The third line, "toma o arami," means "because the thatch is coarse," the so-called mi construction.
The fourth line, "waga koromode wa," means "my sleeves." 328 of this book also opens with "koromode wa."
In the last line, "tsutsu" expresses continuation: "ever wet with dew." Ending on "tsutsu," it leaves lingering the loneliness of being wet all night.
