Commentary
Book Six Autumn Poems II 337

Headnote: "Presented when, in the Engi era, the emperor called for autumn poems."
The poet says that the fields of Musashi in autumn, where maiden flowers bloom, feel dearer and closer than ever. With the blooming of the maiden flower, likened to a woman, the vast Musashi plain seems all the nearer to the heart.
According to the headnote, it was presented when Emperor Daigo, in the Engi era, called for autumn poems. Its headnote is nearly the same as that of 271, the opening poem of this book. The Kokin Wakashū poem "murasaki no hitomoto yue ni Musashino no kusa wa minagara aware to zo miru," which says that for the sake of one gromwell plant all the grasses of Musashi seem dear, set the precedent of Musashi as a place of tender association.
The poet is Ki no Tsurayuki. A son of Ki no Mochiyuki, he was the leading compiler of the Kokin Wakashū and wrote its kana preface. He served as governor of Tosa among other posts, is known as the author of the Tosa Diary, and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

The first line, "Ominaeshi," means "the maiden flower," and from this poem on the book returns to poems on the maiden flower.
In the second line, "niou" means to bloom in beautiful color, and "ru" is the attributive form of the continuative auxiliary "ri."
The third line, "Musashino wa," names the vast plain of Musashi Province, sung since the Kokin Wakashū as a place where grasses of tender association grow.
The fourth line, "tsune yori mo nao," means "even more than usual."
In the last line, "mutsumashi" means "dear and close," and "kana" is an exclamatory particle.
