Uchihaete kage to zo tanomu mine no matsu iro toru aki no kaze ni utsuru na

English Translation
Long have I relied
on you to be my shelter,
pine upon the peak—
do not yield to autumn winds
that strip away all color
Meaning
Pine upon the peak, on whom I have long relied as my shelter, do not change your color in the autumn wind that strips all color away.
Commentary
Book Seven Autumn Poems III 374

Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet calls on the pine on the peak, long relied on as an unchanging shelter, not to let its color be changed by the autumn wind that strips the plants of theirs. In the evergreen pine, it overlays a wish that the one relied on may never change at heart.
Where the poems before it sang of plants that change their color, this one calls on the pine, which does not, never to change.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us.

The first line, "Uchihaete," means "long and unbroken, forever."
In the second line, "kage" means a shade to shelter in, protection; the particle "zo" and the attributive "tanomu" form a kakarimusubi pattern: "on whom I rely as my shelter."
The third line, "mine no matsu," is the pine on the peak, sung of as evergreen and never changing. The poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "iro toru aki no," means "of the autumn that takes away the colors of plants."
In the last line, "utsuru" means to change color or to change at heart, and "na" is a particle of prohibition: "do not change in the autumn wind."
