The autumn hillside

Book Seven Autumn Poems III 412
Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet says that the autumn hillside strewn with leaves turns out to be a brocade one regrets leaving. Likening the leaf-covered slope to brocade, it lays the reluctance to leave such beauty over the reluctance to cut fine brocade.
Where the preceding poem regretted leaves already fallen, this one regrets leaving a hillside strewn with leaves.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Momijiba no," means "the colored leaves."
The second line, "furishiku aki no," means "of autumn, falling and spreading all over."
The third line, "yamabe koso," means "the hillside indeed," with "koso" an emphatic particle.
In the fourth line, "tatsu" is a pivot word meaning both to "leave" a place and to "cut" brocade: "regrettable to leave."
The last line, "nishiki narikere," means "it is a brocade, I find," with "koso" in the third line and the realis "kere" forming a kakarimusubi pattern.
