Book Eight Winter Poems 459
Headnote: "Reply."
The poet says that in her old home, where even her tears fall along with the showers, the color of the leaves has grown deeper still. Taking up Nakahira's likening of the leaves at the ruined house to brocade, she answers that they are deep because her tears have poured down with the showers, conveying the loneliness in which she has lived.
It is a reply to the preceding poem by Fujiwara no Nakahira. To his "konoha wa nishiki orikeru," she answers with "momiji no iro mo kosa masarikeri." The conceit treats her tears as tears of crimson that deepen the color of the leaves.
The poet, called "Ise," was a daughter of Fujiwara no Tsugukage. She served Empress Onshi, consort of Emperor Uda, and later received the emperor's favor. A leading woman poet of the Kokinshū era, she is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals.
In the first line, "sae" is an additive particle: "even my tears."
The second line, "shigure ni soite," means "joining the showers," saying that tears fall along with the showers.
In the third line, "furu" is a pivot word meaning both tears and showers "falling" and the "old" of "furusato," old home. It answers "aretaru yado," the ruined house, in the preceding poem.
The fourth line, "momiji no iro mo," means "the color of the leaves, too," taking up the "brocade" of the preceding poem.
The last line, "kosa masarikeri," means "their depth has grown," with "keri" expressing exclamation.
