Book Eight Winter Poems 480
Headnote: "On hearing that Morouji Ason had gone hunting and passed by in front of her house."
The poet says that though he may not come specially to call through the white snow, she wishes he would not let pass this chance, as he goes by nearby. Through the snow, she conveys her wish that he would stop in.
According to the headnote, she composed it on hearing that Fujiwara no Morouji had passed in front of her house while hunting. To Morouji, who went by on his hunting road without stopping, she pleads that he at least call on her when the chance arises.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us. Fujiwara no Morouji, named in the headnote, was a son of Fujiwara no Tadahira who rose to Major Counselor.
The first line, "Shirayuki no," means "the white snow," leading to "furi" in the second line.
In the second line, "furihae" is a pivot word meaning both snow "falling" and "going out of one's way." "Koso" is an emphatic particle.
The third line, "towazarame," means "you will not call, but," closing with the perfective "me" in answer to "koso" in the second line and continuing with a concessive sense.
In the fourth line, "tokuru" means the snow "melting," leading on to "tayori," a chance or occasion.
In the last line, "nan" is a particle expressing a wish directed at another: "please do not let it pass."
