Book Nine Love Poems I 521
Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet says that when there is no one who returns his love as he loves, even the deepest heart is of no use. The emptiness of one-sided love is stated in plain words.
Like 517 and 518 in this book, which sang of love that "bears no fruit," it laments the futility of an unreturned love.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Waga gotoku," means "just as I do."
The second line, "aiomou hito no," means "someone who loves in return."
The third line, "naki toki wa," means "when there is none."
The fourth line, "fukaki kokoro mo," means "even a heart that loves deeply."
The last line, "kai nakarikeri," means "is of no use, I find," with "keri" expressing the exclamation of realization.
