Book Nine Love Poems I 565
Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet says that since he does nothing but love, he is like the mountains of Suruga, and there is not a day when he does not cry aloud, as if from the peak of Fuji. Pivoting the place names Suruga and Fuji on loving and on crying aloud, it expresses the unceasing pain of love.
Like 516 and 520 in this book, it uses the conceit of entrusting love to place names.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us. The text gives the poet as "yomibito mo," which is treated here as "anonymous."
The first line, "Koi o nomi," means "nothing but love."
In the second line, "Suruga" is a pivot word joining "suru," to do, as in doing love, and the province of Suruga.
The third line, "yama nareba," means "since it is a mountain," leading from the mountains of Suruga to Fuji in the fourth line.
In the fourth line, "ne" is a pivot word meaning both the "peak" of Fuji and the "voice" of weeping.
The last line, "nakanu hi wa nashi," means "there is not a day I do not weep."
