Book Nine Love Poems I 574
Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet says that seeing this morning the sleeves frozen with the tears he wept and stored there, he cannot let his heart thaw and think of her fondly. It conveys that, treated so coldly that his tears froze, he cannot bring himself to open his heart to her.
Overlaying the ice on the sleeves with the heart thawing, it sings of love's resentment through the things of winter.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us. The text gives the poet as "yomibito mo," which is treated here as "anonymous."
The first line, "Nakitamuru," means "storing up tears by weeping."
The second line, "tamoto kōreru," means "the sleeves are frozen," referring to tears that have frozen.
The third line, "kesa mireba," means "when I look this morning."
The fourth line, "kokoro tokete mo," means "with my heart at ease," with "toke," to thaw, an associated word with "kōreru," frozen, in the second line.
The last line, "kimi o omowazu," means "I do not think of you."
