Book Nine Love Poems I 583
Headnote: "Sent to someone."
The poet says that nothing is so beyond all reason as love, for even while they are close together he is already longing for her. The strangeness of love, longing for someone even while beside them, is expressed by repeating "katsu," at once.
588 in this book also sings of the difference in the heart when meeting and when apart, taking up the unreasonable workings of love.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Koi no goto," means "like love."
The second line, "warinaki mono wa," means "anything so beyond reason."
The third line, "nakarikeri," means "there is none, I find," and the poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "katsu mutsuretsutsu," means "even while we are close together."
The last line, "katsu zo koishiki," means "at the same time I long for you," repeating "katsu" to show both happening at once. The particle "zo" and the attributive "koishiki" form a kakarimusubi pattern.
