Book Ten Love Poems II 639
Headnote: "Sent to Hyōe."
The poet says that since the year has changed while they have not met, meeting seems ever more remote. He layers the turning of the year and the coming of spring with the grief of a meeting that has receded further away.
According to the headnote, it was sent to a woman called Hyōe.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Minu hodo ni," means "while we have not met."
The second line, "toshi no kawareba," means "since the year has changed."
The third line, "au koto no," means "meeting."
In the fourth line, "harubaru" is a pivot word joining "harubaru," far away, and "haru," the spring of the new year, with "iya" meaning "ever more."
The last line, "omōyuru kana," means "how it seems to me," with "kana" an exclamatory particle.
