Book Ten Love Poems II 651
Headnote: "He was talking with a woman by a door called Naruto in the Crown Prince's palace, when her parent shut the door and led her inside, so he sent this the next morning."
The poet says that he felt more adrift, with nowhere to turn, than a boat thrust out from Naruto. Parted from the woman by her parent and left outside the door, he likens his forlornness to a boat carried off by the tide.
According to the headnote, he was talking with a woman by a door called Naruto in the Crown Prince's palace, when her parent shut the door and took her inside, so he sent this the next morning. He plays on the door's name, Naruto, as the straits of Naruto with their violent currents.
The poet, Fujiwara no Shigemoto, was a son of the Major Counselor Fujiwara no Kunitsune and served as Minor Captain of the Left Inner Palace Guards, among other posts.
In the first line, "Naruto" is a pivot word joining the straits of Naruto, with their violent tides, and the door called Naruto in the Crown Prince's palace.
The second line, "sashiidasareshi," means "that was thrust out," echoing the door being "shut" in the headnote.
The third line, "fune yori mo," means "more than a boat."
The fourth line, "ware zo yorube mo," means "it was I who, a place to turn to," with "zo" an emphatic particle. "Yorube," a mooring, is an associated word with the boat.
The last line, "naki kokochi seshi," means "felt there was none," closing with "shi," the attributive of the past auxiliary "ki," in answer to "zo" in the fourth line, a kakarimusubi pattern.
