Iwade omou kokoro ariso no hamakaze ni tatsu shiranami no yoru zo wabishiki

English Translation
I have a heart
that loves without a word—
on the rocky shore
as white waves rise in the wind,
the night's approach is hard to bear
Meaning
I have a heart that loves you without a word—and as white waves rise in the shore wind and draw near the rocky coast, so the coming of night is hard to bear.
Commentary
Book Ten Love Poems II 689

Headnote: "He had set his heart on a woman and seemed to have lost his senses; he would not speak and, when evening came, would not get up. Hearing this, the woman he loved wrote asking why he was being so amorous."
The poet says he has a heart that loves without speaking, and that as white waves rise in the wind on a rocky shore and draw near, so the night is hard to bear. Teased for his lovesickness as mere amorousness, he pleads that night after night he suffers from a love he cannot voice.
According to the headnote, he had set his heart on a woman and seemed to have lost his wits, not speaking and not rising when evening came; hearing of this, the woman he loved wrote asking why he was being so amorous. 636 in this book also sings of "iwade mono omou."
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us.

The first line, "Iwade omou," means "loving without a word," the same conceit as "iwade mono omou" in the fourth line of 636 in this book.
In the second line, "ariso" is a pivot word joining "ari," there is a heart, and "ariso," a rough, rocky shore.
The third line, "hamakaze ni," means "in the shore wind."
The fourth line, "tatsu shiranami no," means "of the rising white waves," and the second through fourth lines lead to "yoru" in the last line.
In the last line, "yoru" is a pivot word joining waves that "draw near" and "night." "Zo" is an emphatic particle closing with the attributive "wabishiki," a kakarimusubi pattern.
