Suzukayama iseo no ama no sutegoromo shionaretari to hito ya miruran

English Translation
Like the cast-off robe
of a fisher of Ise
past Suzuka Hill,
will people see my robe
as worn and soaked with brine
Meaning
Like the robe a fisher of Ise, beyond Suzuka Hill, has cast aside, will people look at the robe I left with you and see it as worn and steeped in the sea?
Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems III 718

Headnote: "When he had left a robe at a woman's house and sent for it."
The poet asks whether people will see the robe he left behind as worn with brine, like the cast-off robe of an Ise fisher. Sending for the robe he took off at her house, he expresses embarrassment at its being seen so worn, and concern that their relationship may become known.
According to the headnote, the poem accompanied the messenger he sent to fetch the robe he had taken off and left at the woman's house.
The poet, listed as "Koremasa no Ason," was Fujiwara no Koremasa. The eldest son of Minister of the Right Fujiwara no Morosuke, he rose to Regent and Chancellor. He served as director of the Poetry Bureau that compiled the Gosen Wakashū, and his "aware to mo iubeki hito wa omōede" is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

The first line, "Suzukayama," is a famous poetic place in Ise Province, a mountain on the road from the capital to Ise, and so leads into "Ise" in the second line.
The second line, "iseo no ama no," means "of a fisher of the sea of Ise."
The third line, "sutegoromo," means "a robe cast off," figuring the robe he left at her house.
In the fourth line, "shionaretari to," "shionare" is a pivot word meaning both "steeped in brine" and "worn limp with use."
The last line, "hito ya miruran," means "will people see it so," with "ya" an interrogative particle closing on the attributive "ran," a kakarimusubi pattern.
