Book Eleven Love Poems III 727
Headnote: "Sent to a woman with whom he was secretly living."
The poet says that they should bring their meetings into the open, as slender pampas grass shows its plumes, for they cannot be hidden forever. Unable to bear a relationship hidden from others' eyes, he urges the woman to make their bond known.
According to the headnote, the poem was sent to a woman he had been secretly visiting as a husband. After the preceding poems on false rumors, the book turns from a love that fears being known to one that would rather make itself known.
The poet, Fujiwara no Atsutada, was the third son of Minister of the Left Fujiwara no Tokihira and served as Provisional Middle Counselor. One of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, his "aimite no nochi no kokoro ni kurabureba" is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The first line, "Au koto o," means "our meetings."
The second line, "iza ho ni idenan," means "come, let us show them openly," where "ho" is a pivot word meaning both the "plume" of pampas grass and "ho," the surface, the open. "Nan" expresses strong intention. The poem pauses here.
The third line, "shinosusuki," means "slender pampas grass," which receives "ho ni ide" in the second line as a grass that puts out plumes, while its sound leads into "shinobi" in the fourth line.
The fourth line, "shinobihatsu beki," means "that can be hidden to the end."
The last line, "mono naranaku ni," means "since it is not such a thing," in inverted order with the second line.
