Book Eleven Love Poems III 790
Headnote: "To someone he visited in secret."
The poet says that what pains him about a love hidden even when they meet is that he weeps aloud only when no one is around. He voices the pain of a secret love that must be hidden even in meeting, leaving him to weep only when alone.
According to the headnote, the poem was sent to someone he was visiting secretly.
The poet, Fujiwara no Ariyoshi, lived in the mid-Heian period, and little is known of his career.
The first line, "Aimite mo," means "even when we meet." It is the same as the first line of 728 in this book.
The second line, "tsutsumu omoi no," means "of the love I must hide."
The third line, "wabishiki wa," means "what is painful." It is the same as the third lines of 703, 704, and 726 in this book.
The fourth line, "hitoma ni nomi zo," means "only when no one is near," with "zo" an emphatic particle.
The last line, "ne wa nakarekeru," means "I find myself weeping aloud," with "re" a spontaneous auxiliary, closing on the attributive "keru" in answer to "zo" in the fourth line, a kakarimusubi pattern.
