Because it's autumn—
because you've wearied of me—
has the mist of "now, the end"
risen up between us two,
though my love is not past bearing
- Meaning
- Is it because it is autumn—because you have tired of me—that the mist of "this is the end" has risen? It is not as if my love were more than you could bear.

Book Twelve Love Poems IV 824
Headnote: "On the morning after autumn mist had risen, he was very cold and had said, 'I must speak of this only this once.'"
The poet asks whether, because it is autumn, because he has tired of her, the mist of "this is the end" has risen, though her love is not beyond bearing. On a morning of autumn mist, she sings of the grief of being told it is over, joining "aki," autumn, with "aki," weariness.
According to the headnote, the poem was composed the morning after autumn mist had risen, when the other, being very cold, said it would be the last time.
The poet, Ise, was a daughter of Fujiwara no Tsugukage. She served Empress Onshi, consort of Emperor Uda, and received Uda's favor. Later she bore Nakatsukasa to Prince Atsuyoshi. She is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals.
The first line, "Aki tote ya," means "is it because it is autumn," with "aki" meaning both "autumn" and "weariness," and "ya" an interrogative binding particle. "Aki no kaze kana," the last line of 840 in this book, uses the same pivot word.
The second line, "ima wa kagiri no," means "of now being the end."
The third line, "tachinuran," means "has it risen," layering the rising of the autumn mist of the headnote with the coming of the time to part. It closes with the attributive "ran" in answer to "ya" in the first line, and the poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "omoi ni aenu," means "unable to bear my love."
The last line, "mono nara naku ni," means "though it is not so," with "naku ni" a negative of emotion.
