lost in thought, worn out by watching
eyes, like leaking roofs—
when will there ever come
a break between the clouds

Book Twelve Love Poems IV 854
Headnote: "Sent in the season of the long rains of the Fifth Month, when he had been secretly visiting someone's daughter and her parents, noticing, kept watch."
The poet says that brooding through the long rains, he is worn out by watchful eyes, and wonders when a break in the clouds will come. Drawing on the season of early-summer rains, he sings of the pain of being kept from her by her parents' watch and of longing for a chance to meet.
According to the headnote, he had been visiting a certain person's daughter in secret, but her parents sensed it and kept watch, so he sent this poem during the long rains of the Fifth Month. 858 and 865 in this book are likewise poems composed when parents stood in the way of love.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Nagame shite," means both "the long rains falling" and "lost in thought," with "nagame" joining "long rain" and "gazing in reverie."
The second line, "mori mo wabinuru," means "worn out by the watching," with "mori" meaning both the parents "guarding" and rain "leaking."
The third line, "hitome kana," means "these watching eyes," with "kana" expressing emotion. The poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "itsuka kumoma no," means "when will a break in the clouds," a figure for a gap in the watching eyes.
The last line, "aran to suran," means "will there ever be," with "ran" expressing conjecture.
