- English Translation

Toward Ōmi, they say,
the land of "meeting," I'd find
some guide to lead me,
and there, where no sea-pine grows,
I'd go and voice my grief
- Meaning
- If only I could find a guide toward Ōmi, the land of meeting. Then I would go there and grieve, as one gazes at a bay without seaweed, that I have no chance to see you.

Book Twelve Love Poems IV 858
Headnote: "He had often sent letters, but her father and mother were there and forbade it, so he could not meet her."
The poet wishes for a guide toward Ōmi, and says he would go there and grieve that he has no chance of meeting. He sings of a love blocked by her parents by seeking a road toward Ōmi, whose name suggests meeting, and voices his frustration.
According to the headnote, he had often sent letters, but the woman's parents stood in the way, so he could not meet her. The next poem, 859, is the reply by Harusumi no Yoshitada's daughter, and the two form an exchange.
The poet, listed as "Minamoto no Yoshi no Ason," was Minamoto no Yoshi. He is known as one who was demoted along with Sugawara no Michizane in the Shōtai Incident of the fourth year of Shōtai (901).
The first line, "Aumi chō," means "called Ōmi," with "aumi" joining the place name Ōmi and "au mi," one who meets. It also shares this with "aumi chō na wa," the last line of 843 in this book.
The second line, "kata no shirube mo," means "a guide toward that direction."
The third line, "eteshi kana," means "I wish I could obtain," with "teshi kana" expressing a wish. The poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "mirume naki koto," means "that I have no chance to see you," with "mirume" joining "mirume," a seaweed, and "mirume," a chance to meet, words connected with the lake of Ōmi.
The last line, "yukite uramin," means "I will go and grieve," with "urami" joining "ura mi," gazing at the bay, and "urami," resentment.
