Book Twelve Love Poems IV 881
Headnote: "Reply."
The poet says that like white clouds that seem to part and then meet again, she wishes she could think of him in only a passing way. To one who laments being treated as an ordinary person, she hints at feelings she cannot sever: how much easier it would be if she could think of him casually.
It is the reply to the preceding poem, 880, answering its "ōyoso hito" with "ōyoso ni."
The poet, called "Onna Go no Miko," bears a title meaning an emperor's fifth daughter. There is no settled view as to who she was.
The first line, "Taenuru to," means "that they have parted."
The second line, "mireba ainuru," means "when I look, they meet again," layering clouds that drift apart and together with a bond that seems about to break yet continues.
The third line, "shirakumo no," means "like the white clouds."
The fourth line, "ito ōyoso ni," means "in a merely ordinary way," taking up "ōyoso hito ni," the fourth line of the preceding poem.
The last line, "omowazu mo gana," means "if only I did not think of you," with "mo gana" expressing a wish.
