- English Translation

Those words, "I love you"—
they are what bring me such pain,
for like the bamboo,
of all who live in this world
there is none who leaves them unsaid
- Meaning
- It is the very words "I love you" that are painful, for there is no one living in this world, as many as the joints of the bamboo, who does not say them.

Book Thirteen Love Poems V 920
Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet says the very words "I love you" are painful, since there is no one in the world who does not say them. Words of love on everyone's lips are so common that one cannot trust the heart behind them, and the poem speaks of that pain.
Like the preceding poem, 919, it begins "Omou chō," and the words that poem found dear are here found painful, so the two form a pair. "Kuretake no yo ni" in the third and fourth lines also matches "kuretake no yo ni henu" in 907 in this book.
The poet, listed as "daughter of Kanemochi Ason," was a daughter of Fujiwara no Kanemochi. Kanemochi was a son of Fujiwara no Toshimoto and a brother of Fujiwara no Kanesuke.
The first line, "Omou chō," means "that say 'I love you,'" the same first line as the preceding poem.
The second line, "koto koso ukere," means "those words are what is painful," with "koso" an emphatic binding particle closed by the realis "ukere." The poem pauses here.
The third line, "kuretake no," means "like the black bamboo," leading to "yo," the joint of the stem.
The fourth line, "yo ni furu hito no," means "of people living in the world," with "yo" joining the bamboo joint and the world.
The last line, "iwanu nakereba," means "because there is none who does not say them," giving the reason for the second line in inverted order.
