Rather than blaming
only him for what has come,
of my own heart's doing,
I'll say it was my own fault
for not shunning this in time

Book Thirteen Love Poems V 934
Headnote: "Written on a gift the man had given her while all was still well, when his heart seemed to be changing."
The poet says that rather than blaming him alone, she will think it her own doing, her fault for not having shunned this. Instead of laying the man's change of heart wholly on him, she tries to accept it as her own failing, in a spirit touched with resignation.
According to the headnote, when the man's heart seemed to be changing, she wrote this on a gift he had given her while nothing was yet amiss. The word "wind" in the headnote seems to be a miscopying of "fan," and "this" is taken to mean that fan. Since a fan discarded in autumn was a figure for a woman cast aside, she seems to say that accepting the fan without shunning it was her own fault.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Hito o nomi," means "him alone," with "nomi" an adverbial particle of limitation.
The second line, "uramuru yori wa," means "rather than blaming."
The third line, "kokoro kara," means "from my own heart," as something brought on by herself.
The fourth line, "kore imazarishi," means "that I did not shun this," "kore" seeming to point to the gift on which she wrote.
The last line, "tsumi to omowamu," means "I will think it my fault," with "mu" expressing intention.
