English Translation
I cannot even see,
the rain of tears falls so thick,
showering on me—
this wet robe of false blame I wear
has no way to ever dry
Meaning
The rain of my tears falls so thick I cannot even see, and so the wet robe of false blame I wear has no way of ever drying.
Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems V 955

Headnote: "Composed when his wife, a palace attendant, grew jealous on hearing that he was courting another woman."
The poet says that the rain of tears falls so thick he cannot see, so the wet robe of false blame he wears can never dry. Calling the suspicion that he is involved with another woman a false accusation, he tells his wife that his tears will not stop for grief at being wrongly blamed.
According to the headnote, his wife, a palace attendant, grew jealous on hearing he was close to another woman, and he composed this. The next poem, 956, is the reply of his wife, Chujo no Naishi, taking up "nureginu" to form an exchange.
The poet, listed as "Yoshifuru no Ason," was Ono no Yoshifuru. A grandson of Ono no Takamura, a son of Ono no Kuzune and an elder brother of Ono no Michikaze, he distinguished himself as a commander against the rebellion of Fujiwara no Sumitomo and rose to Consultant.

The first line, "Me mo miezu," means "unable even to see," showing how heavily he weeps.
The second line, "namida no ame no," means "the rain of tears," likening flowing tears to rain.
The third line, "shigurureba," means "since it falls in showers," a verb from "shigure," winter showers, describing tears falling thick.
The fourth line, "mi no nureginu wa," means "the wet robe on me," with "nureginu" joining a robe wet with rain and a false accusation.
The last line, "hiru yoshi mo nashi," means "has no way to dry."
