English Translation
Keeping me in hope,
yet years go by without meeting—
by such deceit still
my heart has learned no lesson,
and this I would have you know
Meaning
You keep me trusting, yet the years go by without our meeting—I wish you would know that my heart has not learned its lesson from your deceit.
Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems V 967

Headnote: "Composed when he had courted someone for a long time, but she remained cold."
The poet wishes she would know that his heart has not learned its lesson from the deceit of years spent trusting without meeting. He asks her to recognize a single-minded heart that goes on loving no matter how often it is betrayed.
According to the headnote, he had courted someone for a long time, but she was always cold. The next poem, 968, is Ise's reply, so as with the opening poems, 891 and 892, it is arranged as an exchange between Narihira and Ise.
The poet, listed as "Narihira Ason," was Ariwara no Narihira. A son of Prince Abo, himself a son of Emperor Heizei, he rose to Provisional Middle Captain of the Right Inner Palace Guards. One of the Six Poetic Immortals and the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, he was taken as the hero of The Tales of Ise, and his "chihayaburu kamiyo mo kikazu tatsutagawa" is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

The first line, "Tanometsutsu," means "while making me trust," "tanome" being the lower bigrade form meaning to make someone rely on you.
The second line, "awade toshi furu," means "years pass without meeting," with "de" a negative conjunctive particle.
The third line, "itsuwari ni," means "by the deceit."
The fourth line, "korinu kokoro o," means "a heart that has not learned," one that goes on loving however often it is deceived.
The last line, "hito wa shiranan," means "I wish you would know," with "nan," a form of "namu," a final particle of desire directed at another.
