Book Thirteen Love Poems V 975
Headnote: "Sent from the road when he went to a woman's house and she sent him away while he was still standing."
The poet says that more than ever before he came home lost and wandering, having gone to a house with no road leading to meeting her. He expresses the chagrin and dejection of being sent home without even being let in, through a heart so confused that he lost his way on the road back.
According to the headnote, he went to a woman's house but was sent away standing, so he sent this from the road home. The first line, "tsune yori mo," is the same as in 913 in this book; where that poem tells of the pain of parting the morning after a first meeting, this one tells of the pain of going home without meeting, so the two stand in contrast.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Tsune yori mo," means "more than usual," the same first line as 913 in this book.
The second line, "madou madou zo," means "lost and lost again," the repeated word intensifying his confusion. "Zo" is an emphatic binding particle.
The third line, "kaeritsuru," means "I have come home," closing the "zo" of the second line with the attributive. The poem pauses here, inverted with what follows.
The fourth line, "au michi mo naki," means "with no way to meet," overlaying the road home with a means of meeting.
The last line, "yado ni yukitsutsu," means "going to the house again and again," with "tsutsu" a conjunctive particle of repeated action.
