Book Fourteen Love Poems VI 1027
Headnote: "To the Third Princess."
The poet says he thinks the grebe that rises and sinks and stirs in deeps and shallows can have no peace even at the bottom of the water. Likening himself to the grebe forever bobbing on the surface, he tells of love's pain, which troubles not only what shows but the very depths of the heart.
According to the headnote, it was sent to the Third Princess, a title for the third daughter of an emperor. 1067 in this book also uses "fuchise," deeps and shallows, speaking of the heart through the shifting deeps and shallows of a river.
The poet, listed as "Atsuyoshi no Miko," is Prince Atsuyoshi. A son of Emperor Uda, he served as Minister of Ceremonial. With the poet Ise he fathered Nakatsukasa, and he was known as an elegant and refined prince.
The first line, "Ukishizumi," means "rising and sinking," overlaying the grebe's movements with a heart tossed by love.
The second line, "fuchise ni sawagu," means "stirring in deeps and shallows," describing its passage between deep pools and shallow rapids. It uses the same word as "fuchise ni naru to" in the fourth line of 1067 in this book.
The third line, "nihodori wa," means "the grebe," a diving bird that stands for the poet himself.
The fourth line, "soko mo nodoka ni," means "calm even at the bottom," with "soko," the bottom, overlaid with the depths of the heart.
The last line, "araji to zo omou," means "I think it cannot be," with "ji" a negative auxiliary of conjecture and "zo" an emphatic binding particle closed by the attributive "omou."
