Book Fourteen Love Poems VI 1032
Headnote: "Composed when Prince Motoyoshi, who had been visiting her in secret, promised to come again soon and then stopped coming."
The poet says that, waiting in secret and unable to sleep, she was deceived even by the moon lingering at dawn. She waited all night for the one who promised to come, and not only did he fail her, but even the moon that stays on into the dawn seemed to have tricked her.
According to the headnote, Prince Motoyoshi, who had been visiting her secretly, promised to come again soon and then stopped coming. 1066 in this book also speaks of the morning moon, lamenting a heart lost in darkness without it.
The poet, Hyoe, was a lady-in-waiting whom Prince Motoyoshi visited in secret, and little more is known of her life.
The first line, "Hito shirezu," means "unknown to others."
The second line, "matsu ni nerarenu," means "unable to sleep for waiting," with "re" an auxiliary of possibility.
The third line, "ariake no," means "of the morning moon," the moon that remains in the sky as day breaks. "Ariake no" also appears in the second line of 1066 in this book.
The fourth line, "tsuki ni sae koso," means "even by the moon," with "sae" adding the moon to the lover who broke his word. "Koso" is an emphatic binding particle.
The last line, "azamukarekere," means "I have been deceived," closing the "koso" of the fourth line with the perfective "kere."
