Book Fourteen Love Poems VI 1037
Headnote: "Sent when he stopped by and the woman fled inside."
The poet asks why, because of the woman who went deep inside on seeing him, his tears should come pouring out. Setting her flight inward against his tears flowing outward, he wraps the sorrow of rejection in wit.
According to the headnote, he stopped by a woman's house, and she fled inside, so he sent her this.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Kage mireba," means "when you saw my figure."
The second line, "oku e irikeru," means "you went deep inside," set against "to e wa izu," coming out, in the last line, contrasting in and out, inner and outer.
The third line, "kimi ni yori," means "because of you."
The fourth line, "nado ka namida no," means "why do my tears," with "nado ka" interrogative and closed by the attributive "ran" in the last line.
The last line, "to e wa izuran," means "come outward," with "to" meaning outside. It pairs with "oku e iri," going inside, in the second line.
