Book Fourteen Love Poems VI 1049
Headnote: "Composed when a man had long failed to visit."
The poet asks whether, since months and days have passed while she waited for his visit, she should now go out on the shore of Koyurugi and reproach him. Overlaying the famous shore of Koyurugi in Sagami with time "koyuru," passing beyond, and gazing over the bay with reproach, she shows a heart turning, from weariness of waiting, to resentment.
According to the headnote, she composed it when the man had long failed to visit. 1022 in this book also joins "urami," gazing at the bay, with resentment, so poems of reproach through seaside place names are layered.
The poet, Ukon, was a daughter of Fujiwara no Suenawa and a lady-in-waiting to Empress Onshi, consort of Emperor Daigo. Her "wasuraruru mi o ba omowazu chikaiteshi" is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The first line, "Tou koto o," means "your visit."
The second line, "matsu ni tsukihi wa," means "while I waited, the months and days."
The third line, "koyurugi no," means "of Koyurugi" in Sagami, with "koyuru" also meaning the time that passes beyond.
The fourth line, "iso ni ya idete," means "going out on the shore," with "ya" an interrogative binding particle closed by the attributive "n" in the last line.
The last line, "ima wa uramin," means "shall I now reproach you," with "urami" joining gazing at the bay and resentment, an associated word with the shore.
