Uki koto no shigeki yado ni wa wasuregusa uete dani mishi aki zo wabishiki

English Translation
At my house, grown thick
with all its many sorrows,
forgetting-grass
I even planted and looked on—
yet how dreary this autumn
Meaning
At my house, overgrown with sorrows, I even planted forgetting-grass and looked upon it, yet this autumn, when you have tired of me, is dreary still.
Commentary
Book Fourteen Love Poems VI 1051

Headnote: "Reply."
The reply says that she even planted forgetting-grass in her house thick with sorrows, yet the autumn is dreary. Taking up the forgetting-grass of the preceding poem, she answers that it was she who planted it to forget her griefs, yet even so she cannot forget the dreariness of an autumn in which she has been tired of.
According to the headnote, it is the reply to the preceding poem, 1050. Where he said he would not go to a house where forgetting-grass grows, she answers that she planted it herself to forget her sorrows, copying his "yukite dani miji" as "uete dani mishi" to turn it back on him.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.

The first line, "Uki koto no," means "of sorrows."
The second line, "shigeki yado ni wa," means "at a house where they are many," with "shigeki" also suggesting thick growth, an associated word with forgetting-grass in the third line.
The third line, "wasuregusa," is the day lily said to make one forget sorrow, taking up the first line of the preceding poem.
The fourth line, "uete dani mishi," means "I even planted it and looked on it," answering "yukite dani miji" in the last line of the preceding poem.
The last line, "aki zo wabishiki," means "the autumn is dreary," with "aki" joining autumn and being tired of. "Zo" is an emphatic binding particle closed by the attributive "wabishiki."
