Book Fourteen Love Poems VI 1072
Headnote: "Sent on a day of falling snow, when the woman he loved had entered court service and it was hard to meet her."
The poet says that since his love never leaves her side, even the falling snow there must melt in the sky. His heart, longing for a woman hard to meet because she serves at court, always stays by her, and he says that even the snow must vanish before that love.
According to the headnote, he sent it on a snowy day when the woman he loved was in court service and hard to meet; her reply is placed in the next poem, 1073. Where the snow of the preceding exchange piled up, this poem speaks of snow that vanishes in the sky, so piling and vanishing form a pair.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Waga koishi," means "my love," with "shi" an emphatic adverbial particle.
The second line, "kimi ga atari o," means "the place where you are."
The third line, "hanareneba," means "since it does not leave," with "ne" the perfective of the negative auxiliary "zu."
The fourth line, "furu shirayuki mo," means "the falling white snow too," taking up the white snow of the preceding exchange.
The last line, "sora ni kiyuran," means "must vanish in the sky," with "ran" an auxiliary of present conjecture. "Kiesenu yuki no" in the second line of the next poem pairs with it.
