Sumiyoshi no kishi to mo iwaji okitsunami nao uchikake yo ura wa naku tomo
- English Translation
-
Sumiyoshi's shore—
"worn," I will not say it;
waves of the offing,
cast yourselves upon me still,
though there be no inner bay
- Meaning
- I will not speak of Sumiyoshi's shore, nor say it was worn; waves of the offing, cast yourselves over me all the same, though there be no bay—no lining.

Book Fifteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1096
Headnote: "When I sent to borrow a hitatare robe and was told, 'It has no lining—would you wear it, or what?'"
The poet says he will not speak of Sumiyoshi's shore, and calls on the waves of the offing to cast themselves over him all the same, though there be no bay. With "kishi" meaning both shore and "worn," and "ura" both bay and lining, he asks, through the scenery of Sumiyoshi's beach, to be lent the robe even without its lining.
According to the headnote, when he sent to borrow a hitatare robe, the reply came that it had no lining and asked whether he would wear it all the same.
The poet, Fujiwara no Motosuke, lived in the time of the Gosenshu, and little more is known of him. He is a different person from Kiyohara no Motosuke, one of the compilers of the Gosenshu.
The first line, "Sumiyoshi no," means "of Sumiyoshi" in Settsu, setting a famed seashore at the start.
The second line, "kishi to mo iwaji," means "I will not call it the shore," with "kishi" joining Sumiyoshi's shore and "kishi," worn, answering "kishi to ya" in the headnote. "Ji" expresses negative intention, and the poem pauses here.
The third line, "okitsunami," means "waves of the offing," with "tsu" an old particle meaning "no." He calls out to the waves.
The fourth line, "nao uchikake yo," means "cast yourselves over me still," overlaying waves breaking on the shore with a robe thrown over the shoulders.
The last line, "ura wa naku tomo," means "though there be no bay," with "ura" joining the bay of the shore and the lining of a robe. "Tomo" is an adversative supposition, inverted with the fourth line.
