Book Fifteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1108
Headnote: "Minamoto no Kaneki was visiting a certain man's daughter, but the girl's mother heard of it and strictly forbade it, so they met in a secluded place; the mother, unaware, went there suddenly, and Kaneki fled, so she sent this."
The poet says that she did not come to scare him like the clapper in a little mountain field, and yet how utterly he fled. Likening the man who hurried away from her daughter to a bird startled into flight by a clapper, she teases him with a string of words related to the rice field.
According to the headnote, Minamoto no Kaneki was visiting a man's daughter, and when the girl's mother heard of it she strictly forbade it; while the two were talking in a hidden place, the mother went there suddenly without knowing, Kaneki ran off, and the mother sent him this.
The poet is the girl's mother, whose name has not come down to us. Little is known of Minamoto no Kaneki either.
The first line, "Oyamada no," means "of a little mountain field," with "o" a prefix.
The second line, "odorokashi ni mo," means "to startle, like a clapper," with "odorokashi" a clapper or similar device to drive birds from a field. It says the mother did not come meaning to frighten him.
The third line, "kozarishi o," means "though I did not come for that," with "o" adversative.
The fourth line, "ito hitaburu ni," means "so utterly," with "hita" echoing "hita," the bird-scaring clapper, as a word related to the little field.
The last line, "nigeshi kimi kana," means "how you fled," with "kana" exclamatory.
