Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems II 1131

Headnote: "In the Engi reign, on the day of the special festival of Kamo, taking up the wine cup before the emperor."
The poet asks whether things should simply end like this, and resolves to see the Kamo Shrine through ten thousand ages. Raising his cup before the emperor on the festive occasion, he wishes the festival to last forever and celebrates his hope of witnessing it.
According to the headnote, it was composed in the Engi reign of Emperor Daigo, on the day of the special festival of Kamo, as he took up the wine cup in the emperor's presence. The next poem is also from a royal progress of the same Engi reign, so celebratory poems for formal occasions stand together.
The poet, "the Sanjō Minister of the Right," is Fujiwara no Sadakata. A son of the Palace Minister Fujiwara no Takafuji, he rose to Minister of the Right and was so called because his mansion stood at Sanjō. The Ogura Hyakunin Isshu includes his poem "Na ni shi owaba ōsakayama no sanekazura."

The first line, "Kakute nomi," means "only like this," referring to the passing of the festival day.
The second line, "yamubeki mono ka," means "should it end," with "ka" rhetorical. The poem pauses here.
The third line, "chihayaburu," is a pillow word for gods and things divine, here modifying "the Kamo Shrine."
The fourth line, "kamo no yashiro no," means "of the Kamo Shrine."
The last line, "yorozuyo o mimu," means "I will see ten thousand ages," with "mu" intention. With the festival it celebrates the long continuance of the emperor's reign.
