Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems III 1249
Headnote: "On a moonlit night, with various companions."
The poet wishes that all the peaks were leveled flat, for without a mountain rim the moon would not hide. So loath is he to see the moon sink that he boldly wishes away the mountains that hide it, expressing his lingering regret.
According to the headnote, it was composed on a moonlit night when he had gathered with others.
It is the closing poem of Miscellaneous Poems III. Where the opening poem, 1195, sang of a night's sleep at the temple of Isonokami, this poem on the pleasures of a moonlit night brings the book to a close.
The poet, "Kamutsuke no Mineo," is Kamitsuke no Mineo, a poet of the early Heian period. The Kokinshu includes his lament for Fujiwara no Mototsune, "Fukakusa no nobe no sakura shi kokoro araba."
Episode 82 of the Tales of Ise contains nearly the same poem as one by Ki no Aritsune, with the last line "tsuki mo iraji o."
The first line, "Oshinabete," means "all alike, everywhere."
The second line, "mine mo taira ni," means "the peaks too, flat," answering "yama no ha" in the fourth line.
The third line, "narinanan," means "would that they became," with "na" the irrealis of the perfective "nu" and "nan" a particle of request. The poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "yama no ha naku wa," means "if there were no mountain rim," with "wa" a supposition.
The last line, "tsuki mo kakureji," means "the moon would not hide," with "ji" negative conjecture.
