the storm wind across the peak

Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Poems IV 1289
Headnote: "Written at the end of a book the Minister of the Left had him write."
The poet says that the storm on the peak of Hahaso is so fierce that he rakes together the falling leaves. Joining "furu koto," old words, with "furu," falling, and "kaki," writing, with "kaki," raking, he likens his gathering of old poems for the Minister to raking up leaves scattered by a storm.
According to the headnote, it was written at the end of a book the Minister of the Left had him write. The Minister seems to be Fujiwara no Saneyori, and the poem appears to have been added at the end of a book Tsurayuki wrote at his request.
The poet, "Tsurayuki," is Ki no Tsurayuki. A son of Ki no Mochiyuki, he was the chief compiler of the Kokinshu and wrote its Japanese preface. He is also known as the author of the Tosa Diary, and the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu includes his poem "Hito wa isa kokoro mo shirazu furusato wa."
The first line, "Hahasoyama," is a hill of hahaso oaks, sung of for its autumn leaves.
The second line, "mine no arashi no," means "of the storm on the peak."
The third line, "kaze o itami," means "since the wind is so fierce," with "o ... mi" giving the reason.
The fourth line, "furu koto no ha o," is a pivot word on "furu koto," both old words of poetry and falling: old leaves of words, and falling leaves.
The last line, "kaki zo atsumuru," is a pivot word on "kaki," both writing and raking, with "zo" closed by the attributive "atsumuru."
