The one I wait for
has come, I hear, and yet
it is the new year
alone that crosses over
the Barrier of Meeting Hill

I hear the one I have been waiting for has come, yet only the new year crosses the Barrier of Ōsaka, the Hill of Meeting—he does not come to me.
Commentary
Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Poems IV 1303

Headnote: "When a man who had come up from the East around the Twelfth Month did not visit a woman he had known in the capital before, even by the first day of the New Year."
The poet says that she hears the one she waits for has come, yet only the year crosses the Barrier of Ōsaka. Reproaching a man come up from the East who has not visited even at New Year, she says that through the barrier named for meeting only the new year has come.
According to the headnote, a man who came up from the East around the Twelfth Month had not visited, by the first day of the New Year, a woman he had known in the capital before, and she composed this. It is the closing poem of Miscellaneous Poems IV, ending the book with the turning of the year.
The poet is anonymous and the name is not known.

The first line, "Matsu hito wa," means "the one I wait for." Poem 1255 of this book likewise laments, in "machite mo," waiting for one who came to the capital but does not call.
The second line, "kinu to kikedomo," means "has come, I hear, and yet," with "nu" perfective.
The third line, "aratama no," is a pillow word for "year."
The fourth line, "toshi nomi koyuru," means "only the year crosses," not the awaited one but the new year alone passing the barrier.
The last line, "Ausaka no seki," is a pivot word joining the place name Ausaka with "au," to meet, the barrier through which one entered the capital from the East. It ends on a noun.
