Book Nineteen Parting Poems 1307
Headnote: "Sent with a mirror to a woman going to Shimotsuke."
The poet says that though she will not cross Mount Futami together with her friend, she sends along the image in the depths of the mirror. Giving a mirror to a woman bound for Shimotsuke, she offers the reflection of her own face as a companion, since she herself cannot go.
According to the headnote, it was sent with a mirror to a woman going down to Shimotsuke. Poem 1314 of this book also adds a mirror's reflection as companion to a traveler, and the two form a pair.
The poet is anonymous and the name is not known.
The first line, "Futamiyama," is a pivot word joining the place name Futami with "futa," lid, and "mi," body, of a mirror box, associated words with the mirror.
The second line, "tomo ni koenedo," means "though we do not cross together," with "do" concessive.
The third line, "masukagami," means "a clear mirror," the mirror of the headnote.
The fourth line, "soko naru kage o," means "the image in its depths," the poet's own reflection.
The last line, "taguete zo yaru," means "I send along with you," with "zo" closed by the attributive "yaru."
