Book Nineteen Parting Poems 1348
Headnote: "Reply."
Ise says that she holds back her tears in her sleeves, resolved not to let them become a tide that would overwhelm the boat. Answering the preceding poem's tears that wet the sleeves even before departure, she says she will dam her own tears so they do not become a tide swamping the boat, showing concern for the traveler's safety.
It is Ise's reply to the preceding poem.
The poet, Ise, was a daughter of Fujiwara no Tsugukage, Governor of Ise, and served Fujiwara no Onshi, consort of Emperor Uda. She received the emperor's favor and later bore Nakatsukasa to Prince Atsuyoshi. One of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, she is represented in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu by "Naniwagata mijikaki ashi no fushi no ma mo."
The first line, "Osaetsutsu," means "pressing them back again and again," with "tsutsu" repetition.
The second line, "ware wa sode ni zo," means "I, in my sleeves," taking up "sode o" in the preceding poem's second line; "zo" is an emphatic binding particle.
The third line, "sekitomuru," means "dam them," closing the "zo" with the attributive. The poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "fune kosu shio ni," means "a tide to sweep over the boat," likening tears to the tide. It takes up "fune ni" in the preceding poem's fourth line.
The last line, "nasaji to omoeba," means "for I am resolved not to," answering the preceding poem's last line with the same "to omoeba."
