English Translation
Cleaving through the clouds,
this feather robe of heaven,
once I put it on,
could I fail to meet with you
through your thousand years
Meaning
Once I put on this robe, like the feather robe of heaven that cleaves the clouds, how could I fail to see your thousand years?
Commentary
Book Twenty Congratulatory Poems 1369

Headnote: "When the Assistant Handmaid Akirakeiko held a celebration for her father the Consultant, and the priest Genchō sewed and sent her a formal skirt and jacket."
The poet asks how, once she puts on a feather robe of heaven that cleaves the clouds, she could fail to meet the thousand years of the one she honors. Likening the gift of formal court dress to a celestial robe, she voices both her congratulations and her thanks, sure that wearing it she will see her father live a thousand years.
According to the headnote, when the Assistant Handmaid Akirakeiko held a celebration for her father the Consultant, the priest Genchō sewed and sent her a formal skirt and jacket, and she composed this. The "you" of the poem seems to be her father, whose longevity was being celebrated.
The poet is given as the Assistant Handmaid Akirakeiko, a woman who served at court as Assistant Handmaid, the second rank of the Handmaids' Office; little is known of her life.

The first line, "Kumo wakuru," means "cleaving through the clouds," as celestial beings fly.
The second line, "ama no hagoromo," is the feather robe worn by celestial beings to fly, a figure for the formal dress of the headnote.
The third line, "uchikite wa," means "once I put it on," with "uchi" a prefix.
The fourth line, "kimi ga chitose ni," means "your thousand years," the long life of the father being celebrated.
The last line, "awazarame ya wa," means "how could I fail to meet them," with "ya wa" rhetorical, carrying the wish to see those thousand years without fail.
