Book Twenty Congratulatory Poems 1417
Headnote: "When someone heard that the poet had come to a temple for a parent's memorial service and said, 'I wish I had gone with you.'"
The poet says that had the friend been reflected on the sleeves of one in sorrow, their color would have looked like wisteria blossoms. To someone who wished to have joined the poet at a parent's memorial at a temple, the poet seems to reply that had the friend been there close by, even the mourning clothes would have looked as bright as wisteria.
According to the headnote, someone heard that the poet had gone to a temple for a parent's memorial service and said they wished they had gone together, and the poet composed this. The next poem is the reply, and the two form an exchange.
The poet is anonymous and the name is not known.
The first line, "Wabibito no," means "of one sunk in sorrow," the poet in mourning.
The second line, "tamoto ni kimi ga," means "you, upon the sleeves."
The third line, "utsuri seba," means "had you been reflected," with "seba" a counterfactual condition.
The fourth line, "fuji no hana to zo," means "as wisteria blossoms," drawing on the name "wisteria robe" for mourning clothes; "zo" is an emphatic binding particle.
The last line, "iro wa miemashi," means "the color would have looked," answering "seba" as a counterfactual and closing the "zo" with the attributive "mashi." It is taken up by "fujigoromo" in the third line of the next poem.
