Book Twenty Congratulatory Poems 1420
Headnote: "When someone who had lost a loved one, longing endlessly and sunk in thought, saw that person in a dream at night and wrote of it to one who also mourned."
The poet says that the dreamer must have been comforted for a moment while not yet awake, while she, who cannot see the dead even in dreams, is the one to be pitied. Told that the dead one appeared in a dream, she imagines that the dreamer found comfort at least while dreaming, and laments her own lot of not seeing him even in dreams.
According to the headnote, someone who had lost a loved one, longing endlessly and sunk in grief, saw that person in a dream and wrote to the poet, who also mourned, telling of it, and she composed this. The next poem is Taifu's reply, and it seems that Taifu was the one who had the dream.
The poet, "the daughter of Lord Harukami," is a daughter of Fujiwara no Harukami. Little is known of her life.
The first line, "Toki no ma mo," means "even for a moment."
The second line, "nagusametsuran," means "you must have been comforted," with "ran" present conjecture. The poem pauses here.
The third line, "samenu ma wa," means "while you had not yet woken," inverted with the second line.
The fourth line, "yume ni dani minu," means "cannot see even in dreams," with "dani" marking the least one could hope for.
The last line, "ware zo kanashiki," means "I am the one who is sad," with "zo" closed by the attributive "kanashiki."
