Book One Spring Poems 24
Headnote: "At the place where the lay-priest Prince, Minister of Ceremonial, held the Day of the Rat outing"
Even the pine, whose life is fixed at a thousand years, will from today, having been pulled by you on the Day of the Rat, share in your longevity and live ten thousand ages; so the poem celebrates its host's long life. By naming ten thousand ages, beyond the pine's thousand years, it heightens the congratulation. According to the headnote, it was composed where the lay-priest Prince, Minister of Ceremonial, held the Day of the Rat outing. This prince was Prince Atsumi, son of Emperor Uda, who continued to be so called after taking vows.
The author, written as Ōnakatomi Yoshinobu, is Ōnakatomi no Yoshinobu. From a family that served as chief priests of the Ise Shrine, he took part in compiling the Gosenshū as one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "chitose made," refers to the thousand years believed to be the pine's lifespan.
Second line, "kagireru matsu mo," means "even the pine whose limit is fixed," with "mo" adding emphasis.
Third line, "kyō yori wa," marks today, the Day of the Rat, as the turning point.
Fourth line, "kimi ni hikarete," is a pivot word combining being "pulled up" as a small pine on the Day of the Rat and being "drawn" into the lord's longevity; like "hikamashi" in the preceding poem, it invests the act of pulling with congratulation.
Final line, "yorozuyo ya hemu," pairs the interrogative "ya" with the conjectural "mu." Setting ten thousand ages against a thousand years, it raises the congratulation higher.
