English Translation
Until yesterday
I thought it no part of me,
the iris grass,
yet today I see it now
at my eaves, as my own wife.
Meaning
Until yesterday I thought the iris grass had nothing to do with me, but today I see it at the eaves of my house as dear as a wife.

Headnote: "For a folding screen"
The iris grass that the poet thought had nothing to do with him until yesterday has today, the day of the festival, been laid along the eaves of his house and become as close to him as a wife. With "tsuma" meaning both the edge of the eaves and a wife, the poem sings charmingly of the festival custom. According to the headnote, it was written to accompany a painting on a folding screen.
Ōnakatomi no Yoshinobu was a poet of the mid-Heian period from the Ōnakatomi family, who served as chief priests of the Ise Shrine. As one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber he took part in compiling the Gosenshū and in reading the Man'yōshū, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "kinō made," pairs with "kyō" (today) in the fourth line, contrasting the eve and the day of the festival.
Second line, "yoso ni omoishi," means "that I thought had nothing to do with me," with "shi," the attributive of the past auxiliary "ki."
Third line, "ayamegusa," is the iris grass laid on the eaves for the festival of the fifth day of the Fifth Month. Following the iris of the Yodo River in the preceding poem, it shows how the grass of the fields comes into the house.
Fourth line, "kyō waga yado no," means "today, of my house," on the very day of the festival.
Final line, "tsuma to miru kana," is a pivot word in which "tsuma" means both the edge of the eaves and a wife. It speaks of seeing the iris on the eaves as something as dear as a wife, with the exclamatory particle "kana."
