Book Two Summer Poems 114
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "For a folding screen in the reign of Tenryaku, at a scene showing people crossing at Yodo"
On the plain of Yodo, thick with wild rice, people cut the dewy reeds while travelers borrow their shade as a lodging for the night. With "kari" meaning both cutting and borrowing, the poem wittily overlaps reed cutting and a traveler's night lodging. According to the headnote, like the preceding poem, it accompanied a scene of people crossing at Yodo painted on a folding screen.
Mibu no Tadami was a poet of the mid-Heian period and the son of Mibu no Tadamine. He is known for the poem with which he competed against Taira no Kanemori at the palace poetry contest of the fourth year of Tentoku, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "shigeru koto," means "so thickly grown," emphasizing how dense the wild rice is in the following lines.
Second line, "makomo no ouru," means "where the wild rice grows," with "ouru" in the attributive form modifying "Yodono" in the third line.
Third line, "yodono ni wa," refers to the plain around Yodo in Yamashiro Province. Following "yodo no watari" in the preceding poem, it is set in the same Yodo.
Fourth line, "tsuyu no yadori o," means "the dwelling place of dew," overlapping the dew resting on the leaves of wild rice with a traveler's fleeting, temporary lodging.
Final line, "hito zo karikeru," is a pivot word in which "kari" means both cutting wild rice and borrowing a lodging. With "zo," it closes in the attributive "keru." Following the preceding poem's crossing in the deep night, this one sings of lodging on the plain near the crossing.
