Maidenflowers glow,
and when I draw near to them
with affection, why
should the dew, for no reason,
settle there with wary heart?

Commentary
Book Three Autumn Poems 159

Headnote: "On visiting a house where many maidenflowers were blooming"
As the poet draws close to where the maidenflowers bloom so beautifully, he wonders whether the dew settled on them grows uneasy and holds itself apart for no reason. Likening the maidenflower to a woman and the dew to her lover, the poem crafts the personified conceit that the dew is wary of the poet drawing near. According to the headnote, it was composed on visiting a house where many maidenflowers were blooming.
The author, written as Yoshinobu, is Ōnakatomi no Yoshinobu. From the Ōnakatomi family, who served as chief priests of the Ise Shrine, he took part in compiling the Gosenshū and in reading the Man'yōshū as one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "ominaeshi," is the maidenflower, likened to a woman.
Second line, "niou atari ni," means "where they glow so beautifully," with "niou" referring to color shining beautifully.
Third line, "mutsurureba," means "when I draw near in affection," with "ba" marking an established condition.
Fourth line, "ayanaku tsuyu ya," means "does the dew, for no reason," with the questioning particle "ya," which is resolved by "ran" in the final line.
Final line, "kokoro okuran," is a pivot word in which "oku" means both dew settling and "kokoro oku," to be wary and keep one's distance. The next poem, 160, also sings of white dew settled on the maidenflower, continuing the pairing of dew and maidenflower.
